Good post Russell. The Singularity is also something I enjoy thinking about. Along with Moore's law and Ray Kurzweil's elegant and difficult to argue with thinking it's become quite rooted in my overall worldview so things I see that are relevant get run through the concept as a filtering mechanism. Incidentally, especially addressing the problem of immortality, Ian M Banks's Culture Novels perfectly describe a post singularity humanity and how we deal with functional immortality (We allow ourselves to die when we get bored).

Ah, the Singularity... It will happen. And since the machine will be created to mirror its creator, you would think the intelligent machine will either befriend the human being or attempt to destroy it if it gets on its way.

But because the machine will be created as a reflection of its creator, the human being, and the complexity of that thing we call consciousness, it will be intelligent, but not intelligent enough, fast enough, to avoid self-destruction -- before it becomes sufficiently intelligent to avoid such fate. And it won't be able to survive nor adapt, as at the end it is a man-made machine.

And in the end, only two things will survive, even after homo-sapiens: numbers and laughter.

Luckily, based on the complexity of what we call intelligence, consciousness and what we call life, the Singularity won't happen in our lifetime, nor our children's lifetime, and not even our children's children lifetime...
