Didn’t See This Coming: Mobile Phones Are Hard To Use

BBC NEWS | Technology | New phone features ‘baffle users’:

The complexity of modern mobile phones is leaving users frustrated and angry, research suggests.

Some 61% of those interviewed in the UK and US said setting up a new handset is as challenging as moving bank accounts.

Compiled by mobile firm Mformation, the survey found 85% of users reporting they were frustrated by the difficulty of getting a new phone up and working.

Of the 4,000 people questioned, 95% said they would try more new services if phones were easier to set up.

As I said, not too surprising. But “setting up a new handset is as challenging as moving bank accounts” — is moving bank accounts really the bar by which you’d want the usability of your service/device to be measured? Yeesh.

  • Do they have to do surveys for these things? In two years, we will get a research with a headline: "Mobile data are very expensive, we should do something about it". Which reminds me, about mobile data, read on http://opinions.hungrymobile.c... - the latest question is related.
  • You know what I find interesting is that everyone is always claiming how hard mobile is...

yet more people have mobile phones than PC's

So obviously everyone gets it, it's not like mobile is a niche thing
  • First question to always ask is who paid for the survey and why. Great post by Ricky above.

Secondly, this is why the iPhone continues to draw great praise. It is NOT the technology in the camera, but the ease of use. To quote Peter Cranston, "People do not buy technology, they buy solutions to their problems..."

Difficult phones are not solutions to our problems.
  • This seems like a reason that the One Web will one day be what mobiles use to deliver most content and services. Why can I not use my online bank account, for example, identically on my desktop and my mobile. This is a powerful way to standardize across mobile devices and is already happening with delivery of many websites that are essentially content, like newspapers and blogs.
  • Also, look at who conducted the survey - Mformation. A quick google gives us their purpose for being:

Mformation's flagship product line, MFORMATION SERVICE MANAGER, is a comprehensive suite of mobile device management (MDM) software that is designed to help mobile operators remotely manage and control a variety of mobile devices (including cellular phones, PDAs, and smartphones) and the data on them. The suite includes separate products for GSM configuration management, CDMA configuration management, software/application management, firmware management (FOTA), remote device and service diagnostics, security management, and customer experience monitoring.

Yeah, that wasn't a biased study.....
