Intel Marketing + WiMAX = ???

xohm.jpg This Intel ad — pumping up the launch of Sprint’s WiMAX network, called Xohm — was on the front of Monday’s Wall Street Journal. What I’m most interested to see from the Xohm launch is how hard Intel will pump WiMAX and Xohm up, and how much marketing spend it will put into its efforts to make WiMAX as well-known as Wi-Fi.

For Xohm itself, it looks like so far, it’s competing mostly on price — but not just against wired broadband operators, against parent company Sprint, too. Cost of mobile WiMAX service from Xohm in Baltimore: $45 per month. Cost of EV-DO service for a data card from Sprint in Baltimore: $60 per month. The EV-DO service obviously brings a lot more coverage across the US, and probably even around Baltimore, while WiMAX offers higher speeds. It’ll be interesting to see how these tradeoffs play out, particularly in terms of price.
