What about use of embedded GPS? All the info I have seen indicates sorta poor use rates, and very high churn off the (large percentage) of them that require a subscription to use.
No, really. I know what I think about this, but what do you think it means?
It means there’s a hell of a lot of GPS-enabled devices out there. It also means that the standalone GPS market is going be tough going forward, since as Russell said a while back, mobile GPS apps will provide good enough solutions for most people.

Does anybody envision a company like Garmin trying the inevitable and adding phone capability to their GPS units ? Or are the telecoms too entrenched in legal protections to permit this ?
