Standalone GPS Units Fall To The Mighty Mobile

First it was digital cameras, then watches, then as Russell predicted in April, GPS-enabled mobile handsets will this year outsell standalone GPS units.

GPS Phones Surpass Standalone Devices:

More GPS-enabled handsets will ship this year than standalone navigation devices, IMS Research said today.

Take that, separatistas!

Does anybody envision a company like Garmin trying the inevitable and adding phone capability to their GPS units ? Or are the telecoms too entrenched in legal protections to permit this ?

It means there's a hell of a lot of GPS-enabled devices out there. It also means that the standalone GPS market is going be tough going forward, since as Russell said a while back, mobile GPS apps will provide good enough solutions for most people.
  • What about use of embedded GPS? All the info I have seen indicates sorta poor use rates, and very high churn off the (large percentage) of them that require a subscription to use.

No, really. I know what I think about this, but what do you think it means?
