Mobile Entertainment magazine’s latest edition has a supplement heavily sponsored by Nokia. While it’s a pretty blatant celebration of all things Nokia, it’s no less interesting for that and it’s not like the Finnish folks haven’t been very major players in mobile in the last decade.
One thing that I knew, but is worth stepping back and thinking about, is that mobile content is really only 10 years old. Prior to 1997, mobile phones were really only about voice calls. It’s true that SMS had been conceived back in the 80’s, but still hadn’t reached any form of critical mass back in 1997.
But two seminal events took place that would lead to a huge industry in it’s own right, as well as inflicting the likes of Crazy Frog on society. Finnish engineers, Taneli Armanto and Vesa-Matti Paananen respectively, invented the iconic Snake (the world’s first mobile game) and the world’s first alternative to the Nokia signature ringtone, with his programmable ringtone software. Who could have predicted how it would fundamentally change how we use our mobiles today and how we’ll use them in the future?
But the fascinating implication is that if that’s how far things have come in the last 10 years, who knows what the next 10 will see, as technology change has a tendancy to accelerate faster than ever?
