A Few Thoughts To End The Week

Posted by Carlo Longino on 12.07.07 | Comment?

I’ve returned from Amsterdam, but managed to pick up some nasty throat virus or something on the way back. So that means you’ll have to insert your own witty repartee and insight into the following stories, which I thought looked interesting:

- AT&T flings cellphone network wide open - A masterful PR job on the part of AT&T, as they get a USA Today reporter to write a glowing story about how they’re “opening” their network, despite the fact that they’ve done absolutely nothing, apart from switch to GSM several years ago. Good followup to this from Techdirt and GigaOM. Of course, we saw this coming, and don’t look for it to let up in 2008.

- More on openness from Marek Pawlowski, and how consumers are deciphering what the word means.

- Palm expects loss in 2Q - Things still looking bleak there.

- Tarek Abu-Esber on some cool new accessories announced at Nokia World. I’d add to that by pointing out the company’s announcement of its “greener” 3110 Evolve handset, along with the high-efficiency charger, which the company claims uses 94% less energy than a standard one. The better charger, along with ones that automatically stop drawing power when they’re done charging, are great — and should be made standard for every device.
