The one thing i dont understand is how is this simpler or more useful than printing the schedule and put it on display on the bus stop ?
That his how it's done in Montreal and it's pretty effective.
Am i missing something ?

Similar service exist in the US too. Check out next NextBus:

http://www.nextbus.com/

It's fairly well deployed in the Bay Area's AC Transit and Muni Bus already. And as a commuter, you can access the next bus info via a mobile page (WML I think):

Yes, it's often the simplest solutions that work the best! I remember a few years ago, when everyone was hyped-up about LBS, I worked on some marketing for a new 'LBS' taxi booking service. However, there was no GPS / triangulation .... just pre-placed posters in key London locations (bars, clubs etc) with a unique reference number. You texted the reference number and the booking service knew, of course, exactly where you were!

Indeed! As a man beyond the age of 26, who finds himself occasionally on a West Yorkshire bus, I can confirm this is a simple service that does its job well. Crucially, it proves that you don't always need clever technology to offer a location-based service with pinpoint accuracy. No GPS or cell triangulation here - just a unique reference number on each bus stop.
