Weel, I think the platform can be envisioned easily:

An OS based on Linux, must be complete and performant

A killer browser written in C (WebKit? )or Java,

Touch sensitive display for natural navigation

Some desktop, probably based on the browser, probably written with GWT

A GPS antenna for every possible integration with Maps and related content (including value added services, like "what restaurants are close to this place?")

Local storage based on gears

Widgets and open SDK (GWT)

Calendar, contacts, documents, based on their web counterparts, being able to work offline thanks to gears

Rich content platform, maybe based on Adobe AIR

"All of those vendors have plenty of “open” platforms they use already, and it seems unlikely that they’ll drop them all and shift to Android"

Unless Android is based on same or similar platform i.e. Linux, and some flavor of Java or Web.
