I agree completely with your assessment of the transcoding and poor experience. But you are also missing the financial implications.

Google sells mobile ads today, bidded separately from the AdWords/AsSense keyword bids for the PC. The average price on the PC is above $1.40, and less than $0.10 for mobile. Thus advertisers who get clicks through this new greedy scheme will be paying 5 times or 10 times more per click than if they manually created a mobile campaign.

Pay more, get less, no choice. Google has an odd definition of "evil".

Of course from their perspective, it's unacceptable that AdMob has thousands more advertisers signed up than Google. This quickly fixes that "problem". ;-)

As Marketing Director for MobiLuck I'm always looking for new ways to get people to join our mobile community directly on their mobile phones. We have found that the design of the mobile landing page is critical to the success of the campaign. If the first screen the person sees does not match or exceed the expectations they had in mind when they clicked on your advert, you've lost them and your CPA skyrockets. And I cannot imagine the first screen (never mind the rest) of a transcoded website doing that. So Google's internet plus free mobile advertising offer is useless to me. The two ad channels of internet and mobile need to be kept separate and aligned and controlled through the marketing strategy.
