Regarding LBS:

Actually I'm a strong believer too, yet I've realized that despite all the hype around LBS some years ago, there are very few enabling services available. E.g. I haven't found any aggregators of location info from many operators (similar to how mBlox aggregates Premium SMS etc), and not even operators seem to be very optimistic/aggressive about this, which in part is reflected by a pricing that's not at all consumer friendly, and their focus on enterprise use. Precision is also an issue. Out on the road it could be dismal unless GPS is used.

Waiting for GPS/A-GPS in all phones won't do. Also, young people will simply not afford those phones in the near term.

Hi Russ

I am from South Africa and therefore do not know what the networks offer in the US. I do believe that Instant Messaging (IM) on phones should grow in the US if it has not taken place already. In South Africa it is starting to replace the Short Message Service (SMS) offered by the GSM networks here.

Have a look at www.mxit.co.za for an example of a IM provider in RSA.

Hi Russ,
Why can't contactless payments be part of mobile payments ? can't RFID or other similar techs be one part of the mobile payment chain ?
As of LBS, I believe the technology is demand-driven. We haven't seen it taken off just because there are not much demands. anybody understand what is the pre-requisite for this demand to explode ?
