Google has announced a Java-based Gmail application, adding to the mobile web version of Gmail that’s been around for a while. At first glance, it seems pretty decent — it’s very simple and straightforward, and works pretty much like you’d expect, with zero configuration. I’ve installed it on a Nokia E61, and I’m hard pressed to come up with any significant differences between it and the on-board email client, apart from a lack of contacts integration (though it can access Gmail contacts and addresses, so that shouldn’t be much of a concern) and an inability to set it to regularly check mail.
But it’s doubtful this is intended to replace the relatively full-featured email clients on smartphones, or push email apps, or be the best solution for heavy mobile email users. However, for featurephones, this looks pretty slick.

Has Google removed the download to the app?
I can’t find at the given URL. Anywhere else I can download it to have a try?
Very slick indeed and contrary to Googles announcement I’ve been able to install and use it on a Samsung D800 here in the UK.
The installer can be downloaded directly to your phone by pointing it to gmail.com/app
