Hey Martin,

Sprint decision to use WiMax was not because they thought it was better technology, but rather that they would have less royalties to pay to the Big Q, which allows for more competition, as the article says, but guess u just wanted to take the opportunity for a dig at Qualcomm.

Hey Carlo,

I think this a very interesting move which is probably disasterous news for Qualcom. In effect, it means that Sprint thinks that WiMAX is better for them than the evolution path of EV-DO.

While most people so far thought that WiMAX will be mainly attractive for new actors in the wireless space it now seems that incumbents are taking a closer look as well.

It will also be quite interesting now to observe how good the value proposition of the UMTS/HSDPA vendor market is to incumbent operators, i.e. if some GSM/UMTS operators will make such a daring step in the future as well and prefer WiMAX over the 3G Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard.

So it looks like WiMAX starts what it is supposed to do for the market: Bring in competition.

[...] Carlo of Mobhappy caught an article that Sprint is committing to use WiMAX for its 4G next generation broadband network. It is currently skipping the 3G CDMA2000 phase and passed off Qualcomm’s OFDMA technology. So the folks at Sprint are trying out something new again. [...]
