The Steve Ballmer Quote of the Day

Posted by Russell Buckley on 05.12.06 | 2 Comments

“‘The leading edge battleground between us and Google in local search really will come on the phone,” predicts Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer.

Well, at least it’s a step in the right direction for Microsoft to be thinking about mobile more. But actually, the leading edge battleground between MS and upstart Google will be the mobile phone - end of sentence.

It’ll be where the old school MS way of computer-centric, expensive applications on the client meets the new, unstoppable, thin client, networked, cheap web services that is the Google business model.

Quote of the day # 2 comes from Google themselves about search functionality and advertising on mobile phones:

“I’m a believer” Eric Schmidt, Google CEO.

I have a sneaky suspicion, no more than a hunch really, that local mobile search will be a bit of a damp squib outside local maps and navigation. So with the big players squaring up to fight over prize that may well not be worth winning, it’ll leave some very big opportunities for the little guys.
