Google Hysteria Rubs Off

People are beginning to notice the announcement that Nokia will next week launch an update of its 770 Internet Tablet, the little Linux-powered, WiFi only device it released last year.

But what’s really getting the hype going is the news that it will now include a Google GTalk application, and now, suddenly, since Google’s involved, it’s a big deal. Mobile operators had better watch out, this will singlehandedly make the muni WiFi market work, etc. etc. etc. It’s funny, Nokia and the whole mobile market was doing pretty well before this announcement. But throw in the Google name, even if it’s for something as ultimately meaningless as a GTalk client (does anybody really use that service for VoIP, anyway?) on a low-volume device, and it’s a revolution!

While Google’s attention and interest in the mobile market is welcomed and appreciated, it’s not what’s going to make or break the next generation of technologies. Keep in mind that not everything Google does turns to gold. Hands up who’s still using Orkut? Google Base?
