Continuing Carlo’s “You Make the Call” theme, I thought I’d ask you what you think of this one.
ROK Entertainment have just launched a box named BLCX that will beam TV to your mobile. If you’ve got a wireless network or are within 10 meters of a broadband connection, your TV gets streamed to your mobile. Or if you’re not in range, it gets delivered over your operator network.
It’ll work on any channel you have on your TV, including paid subscription, and once you’ve paid for the box, it’s free mobile TV.
The box costs GBP 250 ($433) to buy or GBP 9 ($15.61) a month to rent. I assume delivering the content over the operator network could be expensive if you’re not on a fixed price data package. And if you are on a fixed price and use it a lot, an operator may consider this outside the “fair use” proviso.
My first reaction was that this was a pretty cool piece of kit. Which just shows that I really am a geek at heart.
But then I thought about it.
If the issue is that you can’t watch the TV channel you want at home:
1. Stop being a wimp and take control! Tell your kids to go and read a book or something.
2. You can buy another TV for $433 and a pretty good one at that. Do you really want to watch TV on a mobile phone screen with so-so audio?
Outside the home? Certainty few European operators offer data packages at an attractive enough price to even consider this for the vast majority of people.
So, you make the call. Great idea? Or technology looking for a use?
