In Part 5 of our occasional look at how stupid criminals use mobile phones, a couple of choice stories caught my eye.
Firstly, a pair of 16 year olds in Minnesota were arrested for animal cruelty offences. However, the hapless duo made it nice and easy for the police to find out about their other criminal activity:
Anoka County investigators said voices heard on a video taken on a cell phone are Green and Yates. The audio with the video talks about who started a house fire seen in the video.
As a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department puts it laconically:
“You know, if you’re going to be involved in a criminal act, it’s obviously not wise to record the incident and to keep that recording,”
.
Tell that to the Happy Slappers.
Next up, we have the case of 20 year old, who was done for driving without a license, not wearing a seatbelt, having no insurance, reckless driving and disobeying an officer’s signal.
Following a police chase, he successfully fled the scene, but left his mobile phone behind. The phone rang and was answered by one of the policemen, who was asked by the caller why they had “Peppe’s” phone. The quick-thinking officer said he had found it and offered to meet the caller to give it back.
At the meet, the police questioned the man who ‘fessed up the details of who his pal was and where he could be currently located. The police went and arrested him and confronted him with his misdemeanors.
