Here’s an interesting and free application. Merkitys is available for Series 60 Nokias and both uploads your photos to Flickr and geotags them at the same time, all with one click.
Merkitys is the Finnish word for “meaning”, which doubles my Finnish vocabulary – I also know Turve as that’s how Nokia people start emails. But the point is that location tags can add another dimension to organising, or giving meaning, to photos you take, along with the time you took them.
As well as the obvious (I need those photos I took in Berlin a few years ago) there’s also a possible social networking functionality – searching for all photos taken in your neighbourhood, for example.
Merkitys works by tagging the photo with the Cell ID, country and City as a minimum, but also exact GPS ID, if your phone is equipped. It also lists all Bluetooth devices in the vicinity. I’m not sure why that might be useful, to be honest – can anyone think of a groovy use for the feature?
You can see what a photo might look like here with the geotagged info on the right.
