Walt Mossberg Doesn’t Like The Sprint Store, Either

WSJ technology pundit Walt Mossberg’s verdict on the Sprint music store: looks nice, works well, too damn expensive and restricted. It’s a it more even than the pre-emptive obituary another Journal reporter gave last week, but again, not particularly positive.

Mossberg says the service is easy to use and downloads are fast, but calls the $2.50 per song fee “stratospheric”, and the result of “a lethal combination of two industries many consumers believe typically charge too much”. That charge, which I highlighted as a significant obstacle for success when the service first launched, is pretty universally derided — it’s hard to imagine Sprint will be able to keep the price so high for very long.

The touted dual-delivery of the songs to both phone and PC also raises Mossberg’s ire, since the songs can only be played on three Windows PCs (no Macs) and three portable audio players, as well as the service’s limited catalog: 250,000 songs vs. iTunes’ 2 million.
