Satellite radio broadcaster Sirius will supply music to US operator Sprint beginning later this year. The company’s rival, XM, has previously said it’s in similar talks with operators, but Sirius was able to win this round in the battle of the press releases, even though it’s offering no details until “later this year.”
My previous objections still stand: I have a hard time seeing subscribers shelling out to listen to such a one-way broadcast medium. It’s highly unlikely that the Sprint service will offer any of Sirius’ exclusive content — the PR says “select” Sirius programming, and only mentions music channels, so no Howard Stern or NFL. Motorola’s doubts about the viability of mass streaming over mobile networks notwithstanding, even iRadio seems to offer more personalization.
Sprint announced a similar deal back in December with Music Choice, a company that provides music channels for digital cable and satellite TV providers. For $6 a month, users had access to several genre-based channels — which sounds like the exact same type of service Sirius is looking to offer.
