Mobile Gaming – The Truth

Hmmm. I’m not so sure about this, but if it’s true, it certainly explodes some mobile gaming myths.

Mobenta writes about a piece of research commissioned by Sorrent. Note that Sorrent are a gaming company and it’s always good to be a little sceptical about companies commissioning research that support them in some way.

The most surprising finding is that the survey showed that more than 60% typically play mobile games at home. And this is actually supported by another piece of research by In-Fusio – another gaming company.

My first reaction was maybe these players don’t have access to a PC – not so. 82% of mobile gamers do.

But the survey went on to find:

Ïa lot of times people just donÌt feel like doing anything and they want to have an Îentertainment moment.Ì Their mentality is the same as when theyÌre waiting in line, stuck at the airport, bored in class or at work÷TheyÌve got nothing going on, nor do they feel like making a phone call, so they sit and play a mobile game.Ó Multitasking is a big component as well, said Braff. ÏThey literally are watching TV, IMing, text messaging, listening to music, playing video games, and maybe now playing mobile games all concurrently and thatÌs what changed. WeÌre so used to doing one thing at a time; theyÌre not growing up that way.Ó

I read this with some relief, to be honest. I’ve always maintained that mobile gaming is something players dip in and out of, killing time in between other things. The analogy I’ve used is that mobile gaming is sushi, while PC or console gaming is a turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

No need to revise that then :-) How they play is much more important than where.

Another finding (also supported elsewhere) is that 28% of women play mobile games compared with only 17% of men. The Marketing Director of Sorrent did however sound a note of caution on gaming women:

ÏThere is probably a very strong female market playing casual games on their phones, mirroring what you see on AOL Games and Yahoo Games, but we have to now go out and research this…Do I think theyÌll play? Yes. Do I think theyÌll buy $50 or more a year in terms of mobile content? I donÌt think so. I think theyÌll buy a game or theyÌll play the preloaded game and theyÌll play it for a long time.Ó
