iPhone anybody

SmartMobs reports an intriguing story from Media TIC Blog

Why when you do a “who is” about iPhone.org you see it’s owned by Apple Computer Inc. and now redirected to iPod page. Is there something in the air for Apple with the new agreement with Motorola ??

Hmmm. Interesting.

On the one hand, you’d expect Apple to have hundreds of domain names – after all, they can purchase dozens on the merest whim, in the expectation that one of them might be useful one day.

On the other hand, the deal makes no strategic sense for Apple unless they are going into the phone market. They’ve always claimed that the reason for iTunes (software) is to sell iPods (hardware) and this, in part has been their corporate strategy historically too.

So encouraging users of iTunes to use other devices seems to be shooting themselves in the foot. Unless, they’re planning to launch an iPhone too, no matter that Mr Jobs vehemently denies it.

Motorola would make the perfect partner in many ways. Certainly culturally. And their new line up of phones shows they’re back on track feature-wise and design-wise.

So I’ll put up $100 to say they’ll be an iPhone from Apple within 18 months. Any takers?
